TODD'S TECH TALK
Volume 3

Todd’s Tech Talk: Vol. 3

Rethreading your machine. If you’ve purchased a BERNINA from CQC, or in the past decade, certainly you’ve been told that when re-threading your machine, you should snip your thread from up near the spool and pull it out from down by the needle. If you own a different brand of machine, then you may not have ever heard this, or perhaps thought that it only applied to BERNINA machines, for some odd, Swiss reason. However, this applies to EVERY machine, regardless of make, model, or year of manufacture.

Of course, this wastes 12-18” of thread, and your mom or grandmother always pulled the thread through from the top, so is it really necessary? The answer is, “Yes.” And I’ll explain why.

Every machine has a check spring that the thread goes through before going up into the take-up lever. This check spring must be intact and able to freely move up and down in order to keep proper tension on your thread and to help keep your thread moving up and down with the needle so that it doesn’t just bunch up in between needle strokes. If this spring breaks, gets lodged up in the machine, or in newer machines separated from its thread sensor flag, then your machine will not sew. At least once per month I get a machine in the shop where this happens. While these springs can eventually fatigue through and wear out over time, the most common cause of these issues are folks pulling the thread out from the top. This pulls the spring up into its most stressed position, causing excessive wear on the spring, sometimes causing it to break or get dislodged from the thread sensor flag, and other times causing it to hang up on some internal component that it normally would never come into contact with, hindering it from functioning.

Save yourself an unnecessary service bill and clip your thread by the spool, then pull it out from down by the needle. These short pieces of thread are great for other craft projects, to add color to bird nests, or numerous other creative ideas.

Happy sewing,

Todd – Here to make sewing enjoyable and trouble-free.
