Blocks Without Borders – Art & Landscape Group

Blocks Without Borders (an Art & Landscape Society) meets on the Third Thursday of each month at 1 p.m.  Prepare to exchange ideas, along with giving and receiving inspiration.  Don’t forget to bring your Show-N-Tell! We will have a door prize! No RSVP necessary.

  • If you missed seeing the 12  “Bird Challenge” entries at CQC, they are on display the the Cortez Cultural Center through the month of May. Check it out! Many thanks to all who helped make the installation happen.
  • This month Marie will be showing us how to make Post Card quilts. These little gems are a mini landscapes and can be as simple or complex as your heart desires. Bring scraps and ideas for how you might show off your personality, our area, a dream, a laugh or anything that tickles your fancy in a small way.
  • Our next challenge (due in July) is “Necessity is the mother of Invention”! One over achiever in the group has already completed hers and it’s remarkable.

Michelle is scheduled to be in the USA to tape on the Ricky Tims’ Show… and will be here at Cortez Quilt Company and More to teach! This class features creating your own piece of art from a white piece of fabric and some paint. the cone flowers are painted on making this a whole cloth design. Michelle will explain how to use the textile paints and non-textile paints and show how to divide up your background area and create interesting designs on your art piece.

This workshop is great for those wanting to learn new techniques and skills in textile arts. You will learn how to paint onto the fabric to create a nice background as well as the foregound picture of the cone flowers. Students will also learn some basic quilting techniques and thread work, anto to top it off play with some bobbinwork.

Michelle is scheduled to be in the USA to tape on the Ricky Tims’ Show… and will be here at Cortez Quilt Company and More to teach! Michelle created this project after a local bush fire burnt through her property. She noticed the damage left behind, along with the amazing colors that were in the sky. All this led to creating this great piece of art.

This workshop is great for those wanting to learn new techniques and skills in textile arts. You will learn how to mix your paints and how to apply them to fabric. You will learn how to paint onto the fabric to create a nice background creating a starting point for your thread work. You will also learn some basic quilting techniques, thread work and bobbin work.

Class Policies

Classes are limited to 6-8 students (minimum of three) depending on the complexity of the project.

Class fees must be paid and any required pattern/book/notions must be purchased in advance to hold your space.

Store credit will be given for paid classes if you cancel and give 48 hours notice (otherwise, no credit). Refund or store credit (your choice) given for classes if we cancel due to lack of sign ups.

Bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies (scissors, seam ripper, straight pins, etc.) to class. If you prefer, you may use one of our BERNINA classroom machines. We request that you use either Mettler or Aurafil thread on classroom machines.

Bring lunch (we have a fridge and microwave) or order out from one of the many fine restaurants on Main Street. Coffee, tea, water, and soft drinks are complimentary.

It is important to be on time for class. We recommend that you arrive 10 minutes before the class start time. If you arrive earlier please be aware that your instructor will not be available until the class begins.

Please do not park on Main Street in front of the shop when you are here for a class.

Please silence your cell phone while in class. If you need to make a phone call during class, we ask that you step outside or to the back of the store where it’s quiet so that other students are not distracted.

Youth classes are for students 8-16 years of age. Youth members may take the adult classes with instructor approval.

Except for nursing infants up to 12 months of age, children may not attend classes with parents.
