2017 Preview: Classes and More

We're hard at work on a robust class schedule and other fun events for 2017. Here are some highlights.

In our new series - Little Quilts - make these cute wall hangings to display each month in your home or office. There are three options: 12" square quilt to hang on a stand, 12" x 16" with the month included at the bottom, or you can add an optional calendar holder. We'll do January on 1/6, February on 1/27, and then monthly thereafter to stay one month ahead of the calendar. These are simple applique projects that can easily be made in one session. Do one, two, three or all twelve.

On the first Saturday of each month we'll offer three-hour Make & Take classes in the morning and Youth Classes in the afternoon. Make & Take sessions will run from 9:30 - 12:30, and the class fee is only $10 plus supplies. On January 7 we'll make Take Four placemats. The Youth Classes will be held from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. They are $25 with all supplies included. The January youth project is in the works.

Look for our new series of Skill Builder sessions in both the quilt and yarn departments. These will usually be half-day sessions (occasionally all day) where you'll learn an intermediate or advanced quilting, sewing, or knitting technique.

Our classes are limited to 6-8 students (minimum of three) depending on the complexity of the project. If we don't have at least three students signed up for a class 48 hours in advance of the start time, the class will be cancelled or rescheduled. This applies to both quilt and yarn shop classes. Avoid disappointment by signing up early.

Did you know that you can take unlimited classes at Cortez Quilt Company for three months for only $69? Purchase a Class Pass anytime. It’s activated when you take your first class and expires three months later. Some restrictions apply. Click here to see the current class schedule.

We're adding more BERNINA Clubs for 2017 and each session with have two instructors. Cindy, Ann, and Aimee are teaming up for the following: BERNINA Club will meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. Software Club will meet on the third Tuesday from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. Embroidery Make & Take will alternate every other month on either Tuesday from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. or on Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Get the details and dates here.

Speaking of Sundays, we'll be offering afternoon classes and Open Sewing on some Sundays staring in February.

And please join us at the shop every Monday and Wednesday from 10-5 for Open Sewing. Work on any project you’d like and enjoy the company of other sewists and quilters. Bring your sewing machine or use one of our BERNINA classroom machines. Open Sewing is FREE and you’ll have plenty of space to work and the use of our cutting tables and ironing boards. (Note: About once a month Open Sewing will wrap up at 3 p.m. to make space for a Youth Class.)

Also for 2017 . . . another UFO Challenge! This one will run for three months starting in January with a fun new format open to quilters, knitters, and crocheters. We'll also have a Cortez Quilt Company Staff Challenge. Get ready to watch that competition take off in a big way. Full details on the UFO Challenge will be in the newsletter next week. Stay tuned.

As you can see, we have a lot planned for 2017, with more to come. As we wind down this year and enjoy the holiday season, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and thank you for supporting us during this past year. We are open because you choose to shop here, and we appreciate it very much.

Block of the Month

Getting to Know Hue starts in January. The finished sample just came back from the quilter and it's gorgeous! Come by the shop to see it.

One of the  nice features about this 96" x 102" quilt is that the four applique blocks are laser-cut and pre-fused making them quick and easy. Also, the pieced blocks have a background fabric border around them so that you trim blocks down to the perfect size (so no stressing if your finished block is a tiny bit off). When it's time to make the lone star featured in the center of the quilt, we'll schedule a free class for everyone who is participating in the Block-of-the-Month. You can sign up for this program now. The cost is $29.99 per month for 12 months. Block kits will be available on the 15th of each month starting in January. We're happy to ship monthly to our out-of-town customers. Limited supply . . . don't miss out!
