We Need a Name!

As you've probably already heard, Cortez Quilt Company is adding a yarn department. It's really a "shop within a shop" and we feel it deserves a name of its own. This is where you come in. If you can think of a fun name for us to give our new yarn shop, please submit it via email by Saturday, March 12. If we choose your entry you win a $25 gift certificate (good for fabric, yarn, or whatever your heart desires) plus bragging rights. Help us out with this. We know the perfect name is out there, just waiting to be thought of. You may submit as many possibilities and you'd like as long as they are in one email message. Thanks!

Upcoming Classes

Double Duty: A Pincushion Scrap Bag Combo
Thursday, March 10, 2016
6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
$18, pattern provided

We teach this class about once a year. Make this handy item for your sewing room in under three hours. It’s lined with iron-on vinyl so that your threads and fabric scraps don’t get stuck to the sides of the container when you’re emptying it. The pincushion is filled with crushed walnut shells. No homework and we have all the supplies needed to make project at the shop. Karen Childress will teach this evening class.

In The Kitchen
Krista’s Kitchen Hot Pads
Wednesday, March 16, 2016
10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
$15, plus pattern

For our March In the Kitchen class we’ll be making the cute chenille potholders. Use the Olfa chenille cutter or a very sharp, pointy pair of scissors to make them just fluffy enough to be functional in the kitchen. These are quick and easy and you can probably make two or three during this half-day class. Judy Bryan will be your instructor.

Project Bag
Friday, March 18, 2016
10:00 a.
 m. – 5:00 p.m.
$29, plus pattern

A sturdy quilted base and fun fabric borders add interest to this handy tote. A zippered closure keeps everything safe and secure and a see-through vinyl window lets you see at a glance what’s in your bag. The pattern includes instructions for four different sizes. Aimee King will teach this class.

Sale . . . March 16-21

Now is your chance to save on a new BERNINA. From March 16 - 21 only, take $200 off a 5 series machine, $250 off a 7 series machine, $300 off the 880, and a full $500 off the wonderful Q20 sit down long arm quilter.

Also, if you've been thinking about adding the powerful BERNINA stitch regulator (BSR) to your accessory box, it's 25% off. That is an excellent savings on the BSR which, if you do free motion quilting, is a "must have."

We're also offering 60-month zero percent financing on purchases over $3,000.

BERNINA Club

Cindy is not feeling well so we've moved BERNINA Club to:
Tuesday, March 15, 2016

1:30 p.m. OR 5:30 p.m. (same program, repeated)
Free ($5 supply fee for the photo if you stay to make the project)

Join us in creating a fun piece of art that can be incorporated into a bag or quilt, or make it to hang on your wall. We will begin with a video from a BERNINA educator (35 minutes) and then will try out the following techniques:

* Photo Printing
* Good Piecing Practices
* Free Motion Quilting
* Free Motion Couching

We will have a small supply of embellishments available for you to use, and you are encouraged to bring pieces of yarn, cording, buttons etc. to add to your project. If you would like to print a different photo (we'll have the one shown here available), we have specialty printing products available and will sell sheets individually for this project. Or we can print a photo for you if you drop it off by March 11.

Every BERNINA club includes a time for show and tell. Bring items you are working on or have completed for extra chances to win a door prize. We encourage non-BERNINA owners to attend these events. No matter which machine you own, you'll learn lots at BERNINA Club!

Please register in advance by calling 970-565-7541 or send an email to Cindy. Please indicate which session you plan to attend and if you will be making the project or staying only for the presentation.

Tip of the Week: Tape Your Ruler

You know that sinking feeling you get when you open a new pattern and it says "cut (18) 2-inch strips from fabrics A, B, C, and D? Despair no more. Here are two ways (one practically free) to make your task easier.

Suggestion #1: Tape Your Ruler
Grab a roll of blue painters tape and carefully place three layers on the back of your ruler at the mark indicated to cut your strips. Not only does this eliminate the need to read the ruler for each cut, but it has the added advantage of giving your fabric a small bump to ride up against for precise cutting.

Suggestion #2: The Creative Grids Stripology Ruler
This ruler is a tad pricey ($59.99), but well worth it if you do a lot of quilting. It features slits every 1/2 inch so that you can cut a variety of strip sizes quickly and easily. We keep these in stock.

Thanks for LouAnn Burkett for this week's tip!
