MICHELLE DE GROOT

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Michelle de Groot, I've in rural Victoria, Australia, near Ballarat on a 70 acre hobby farm. I have a studio to work which is 14 x 6 mt in length and width.I have been sewing since I was a child, all sorts of projects from latch hook rugs to tapestries and cross stitches. At school and at home I was taught how to sew clothing and make my own clothes from patterns and home made patterns that my mother and I had changed to suit my height. Being 6 foot tall has its disadvantages when growing up.

Then I progressed to creating with flowers and art and crafts in my younger years by becoming a florist and business owner. I was very busy making wedding arrangements and bouquets for many years. This was a wonderful career but with marriage and a child I decided I needed something to keep my home a little more and less physically aggressive. While in town I saw a patchwork shop and walked in amazed at the lovely quilts on display and thought straight away, “I can do this”.  And I did.

I started like most people with the basics early on sewing my quilts together by hand piecing and hand quilting. I then progressed to machined sewing as I realized I wasn't going to live long enough to make all the wonderful things I wanted to make.  After realizing I had found a new love and addiction, I then wondered how I was going to quilt them; hadn't tried that part of it at that point! So I started taking classes and practiced a lot at home and after 4 years of constant practice I began to quilt my own quilts, saving me a fortune! Once this was achieved, me being the forever wanting a challenge, I decided to try my hand at textile arts. And WOW did I love that!

I then set about learning and learning and learning, making sure I didn't miss anything, always striving to be better at what I was doing. Once I found myself at a point where I had found my niche, I then decided, after many people asking me to teach them to do what I did, that it was time to start teaching what I had learnt over many years. And here I am today, a textile artist, professional quilter, artist and tutor in my own right. Check out Michelle's website HERE

"We will be creating our own artwork using bleach and fabric paints to effectively take out the color of the fabric in places that we want and not in the places we don’t want.
You will be guided along the way each step and will be shown simple techniques that will give you the groundwork to really create your own piece.
Each time i do this class, it is just wonderful to see how much people enjoy the process and the finished products.
You will also get to then free motion quilt your piece and really make that bleach work stand out.
This is a wonderful class for the intermediate sewer, and you don’t even need to know how to draw or paint".

CLASS DESCRIPTION FROM MICHELLE

"This is one of the most enjoyable classes I teach
We will be making the Koi Fish and you will learn how to guide your paints and how to blend the silk paints, you don’t need to know how to draw or paint for this class. All my classes are designed that a person with no art experience or history can do this.
You will be surprised at how easy it is and how enjoyable it can be to just watch the silk fabric change into a piece of artwork.
Once you have painted your piece which is the first day you will then be given guidance and taught how to do some free motion quilting and even some bobbin work on the piece to create those lovely shimmery lines in your quilting.
Again, I stress no painting experience necessary with this class.
Come and join me you will love it!"

CLASS DESCRIPTION FROM MICHELLE

"I created this workshop a few years ago and most people are amazed at how easy it is to create their own piece of art from a white piece of fabric and some paints. The cone flowers are actually painted on making this a whole cloth design. I explain how to use the textile paints and non-textile paints in this process and also show the students how to divide up your background area and create some real interesting designs on their art piece.

This workshop is great for those wanting to learn new techniques and skills in textile arts. You will learn how to paint onto the fabric to create a nice background as well as the foreground picture of the cone flowers. You will also learn some basic quilting techniques and thread work, and to top it off you get to play with some bobbin work."

NEW THREAD
CORTEZ

We have 2 new lines of thread available here in Cortez that are sure to help you take your project to the next level!

Bottom Line Thread:
The Bottom Line makes a fantastic bobbin thread for any type of sewing. Its lightweight, blending colors are easily matched with any top thread. Bottom Line is a 60 wt. 2-ply polyester thread. Designed for applique, bobbin thread, and quilting. Invisible applique and binding is a breeze with Bottom Line as it glides through layers of fabric. Bottom Line is also fantastic for micro-stippling and English Paper Piecing. Lint-free never felt so good.

MicroQuilter:
MicroQuilter is a 100 wt. 2-ply extra-fine polyester thread designed for invisible machine applique, detail quilting, and stitch in the ditch. It is an extremely fine thread that can be sewn with a very small needle, rendering the thread virtually invisible. MicroQuilter is noticeably strong, especially considering its thin diameter and is the preferred thread for micro stippling and miniatures. MicroQuilter can be used on home machines and longarm machines.
