UFO Challenge Winners

Congratulations to Charlotte Gray, Corinna Gray, Sue Maxwell, Kathy Young, and Stacy Zion who each won a $100 Cortez Quilt Company gift certificate when their names were drawn at the UFO Challenge gathering on Saturday morning. The UFO Challenge resulted in 159 finished projects which was 38% of those registered back in January. Way to go, everyone!

Left to right: Sue, Charlotte, and Corinna with their prizes after the Saturday event.

Kathy Young came by later in the day to pick up her gift certificate. Stacy Zion popped in to claim her prize too, but we didn't have the camera handy. She was all smiles, too!

Upcoming Events

Third Thursday Demo
Thursday, June 18, 2015
12:30 or 5:15 p.m.

This month we’ll do a demonstration of the Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star ruler. This is one in a collection of new tools created by Deb Tucker of Studio 180 Design that we’re now carrying. The Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star tool and technique allow for streamlined construction and precision trim down. This results in greater accuracy and makes these traditionally challenging blocks much easier. Join us at either 12:30 p.m. or 5:15 for this informative demo. Bring a friend!

Quilt ‘Til You Wilt
Friday, June 26, 2015
5:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Bring your machine, a project to work on, and dinner to enjoy an evening of sewing with friends. Beverages provided. This event is free but space is limited, so call us at 970-565-7541 today to reserve your seat.

Upcoming Classes

The Strippers
Friday, June 12
THIS WEEK!
10:15 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Admission to The Strippers (an ongoing group – join anytime) is the purchase of the book Jelly Roll Jambalaya Quilts ($14.95)
Class is free with purchase of a jelly roll at CQC (otherwise $29)

Join The Strippers and make a Jelly Roll Quilt from the very popular book Jelly Roll Jambalaya on the second Friday of every other month. We will work our way through all nine quilts in the book, but you don’t have to attend every session. Pick and choose or make them all. This great book also includes fully-illustrated Le Petite lessons and helpful tips related to the projects. In June we’ll make the quilt on page 6 – Baby King Cakes Quilt. It measures 60″ x 72″ and uses one jelly roll, 1/3 yard for inner border, and 2 yards for final border and binding.

Fusible Fabric Boxes
Friday, June 26
1 – 5 p.m.
$15, pattern required

These cute boxes can be made in five different sizes, and they’re so cute and so handy. Store your sewing notions, keep cosmetics organized on your bathroom counter, use as drawer dividers or a “catch all” in the kitchen. The possibilities are endless! No need to bring your sewing machine to this class. You only need it to make the binding and you can use one of our machines for that. Judy Bryan will teach this class.

See our full class schedule here.

Report from After Market Review

Thanks to everyone who came out last Wednesday for After Market Review. We enjoyed our best attendance to date for this annual event. The feedback you provided is invaluable and we appreciate it so much. Based on that feedback, you can look for the following in the shop over the coming months . . .

• Block-Loc Rulers

• Olfa Chenille Cutters

• A series of classes using the butterfly pattern to improve free motion skills

• Fun & Done quilt-as-you-go patterns (we'll schedule a demo or class on this)

• Patterns and classes using the Cheryl Phillips Squedge rulers

• A few other patterns that got enough votes

Karen is still sifting through a few other possibilities from Spring Quilt Market. Rest assured you'll always see new patterns, notions, and fabrics arriving weekly at Cortez Quilt Company. We love discovering new things as much as you do. :)

Design Card Deal

Do you own a BERNINA Artista 165-185? Do you need a new Personal Design Card? We have one in stock that we can't use on the current machines. Regular price is $120. It's available for only $50 to the first person to call us at 970-565-7541.

Tip of the Week: Cornerstones

Karen recently made a new shop sample that has sashing between the blocks. The pattern called for using long strips for the sashing going in both directions. Having once learned the hard way, this time she chose to put cornerstones in the sashing so that the blocks would line up perfectly in the finished quilt top. The fabric is black so unless you look closely you can't really see the cornerstones, but it was worth the little bit of extra time it took to include them. You can also have fun with cornerstones by fussy cutting (shown here) or piecing to make the cornerstones half-square triangles, four- or nine-patches.
