Trim It Down

At Quilt Market last week I spent some time with Deb Tucker of Studio180 Designs. We carry several of her rulers and patterns, and they're all great (check out the Hunter's Star and Lemoyne Star samples we have hanging in the shop). One thing we like about her technique is that she makes almost all of her block units oversized and then trims them down so that everything fits together perfectly. Deb's Wing Clipper ruler, shown here, is the best on the market for cutting down flying geese units.

The next time you're making a quilt that includes a lot of - for example - flying geese, half-square triangles, or four patches, cut a little bit oversized, piece, and then trim the finished units down to the appropriate size.

Here's a half-square triangle unit ready to be trimmed down to 4 1/2 inches using the Bloc_Loc ruler. These rulers a nice because they feature a diagonal ridge on the underneath side that bumps up against the seam and eliminates slipping.

And here's the same unit ready to be trimmed using a Creative Grids 4 1/2 inch ruler.Notice the black diagonal line on the ruler that lets you know exactly where to position the ruler before trimming.

For these 4 inch finished units, instead of cutting the two squares using the usual HST formula (finished size plus 7/8") we cut them 5 1/4 inches leaving enough extra around the edges to trim down to size.

This technique won't work with everything (e.g., a nine-patch unit) but when you can, use the "trim it down" method and you're sure to be pleased with the results.
